The GLOBE South Africa National Chapter was formally launched in the South African National Assembly in January 2013. The current president is the Hon. Cedric T. Frolick MP, House Chairperson for Committees, Oversight and ICT in the National Assembly.
The Hon. Frolick, in his capacity as Vice President of GLOBE International, chaired the GLOBE Conference on Adaptation: Policy, Practice and Legislation in Beijing in July 2013, an event that brought together legislators, academics, policymakers and experts to explore South-South cooperation on adaptation, the output of which was a landmark set of "Adaptation Principles" that have since been used to inform the development of adaptation-related legislation
Members of GLOBE South Africa have further agreed on forming a series of subcommittees with the following objects and chairs:
- Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Hon. M. Motshekga
- Human Settlements: Hon. B. Dambuza
- Legislation & Oversight: Hon. De Lange
- Pan African parliament: Hon. J. Thibedi
- Social Mobilisation: Hon. R. Bhengu
- New Scientific Discoveries: Hon. S. Sizani
The Parliament of South Africa has provided administrative support to enable the Group to coordinate its activities.
GLOBE Cape Town Legislators Forum
On 3rd to the 4th December 2011, legislators from 16 parliaments convened in the National Assembly in Cape Town. The core theme was domestic climate change legislation with presentations and discussion of the latest legislative developments and specific sessions on adaptation and forestry (REDD+). The Hon. Johnny de Lange, the Chair of the Committee on Environment and Water Affairs, gave a detailed presentation of the National Climate Change Response White Paper during the GLOBE Cape Town Legislators Forum in December 2011. At the end of the forum, legislators agreed a unanimous statement to be presented to COP17 in Durban.
Key participants included the South African Minister for Environment and Water Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Max Sisulu, former UK Deputy Prime Minister, Lord (John) Prescott and the President of GLOBE International, Lord Deben.
